Trafigura Can’t Dump €1M Fine Over Ivory Coast Waste

Law360, New York (December 23, 2011, 1:56 PM EST) -- An appeals court in Amsterdam on Friday affirmed a €1 million ($1.3 million) criminal fine against oil and metal trader Trafigura Beheer BV for transporting toxic waste to the Ivory Coast in 2006 and concealing how harmful the substance was.

The ruling affirms a July 2010 decision finding that Trafigura had violated European Union waste export regulations, but acquitting the energy giant of forging a notification regarding the ship's toxic substances.

Trafigura said Friday that it was considering another appeal.
