EU To Take Closer Look At Eni, Exxon Deal

Law360, New York (July 17, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission has decided to take a closer look at Italian energy company Eni SpA's proposed acquisition of a network of ExxonMobil gas stations, abandoning the simplified merger review procedure for a complete first-stage inquiry.

The Commission said on Tuesday that it had upgraded its investigation of Eni's purchase of 102 stations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The deal would also give Eni control of Exxon's commercial operations in airports in Prague and Bratislava, as well as some of the company's lubricating units,...
