EU Wants Ontario Energy Bill Under WTO Review

Law360, Los Angeles (January 11, 2012, 9:07 PM EST) -- The European Union has asked the World Trade Organization to establish a panel to review energy policies implemented by the Canadian province of Ontario, the WTO said Wednesday, escalating the EU's fight over subsidies used in wind and solar projects.

The move comes months after the EU announced that it was seeking WTO action over the Ontario Green Energy and Green Economy Act. The EU claims the act, which offers subsidies to companies that produce renewable energy using domestic technology, conflicts with WTO rules.
