House Dems Seek Privacy Hearing On Carrier IQ Software

Law360, New York (January 12, 2012, 5:03 PM EST) -- A U.S. House of Representatives committee’s top Democrats on Wednesday demanded a hearing to investigate claims that smartphone software made by Carrier IQ Inc. secretly recorded the content of users’ text messages and other confidential information without permission.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s ranking member, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., called on the committee’s Republican chairs to arrange a hearing to examine whether Carrier IQ’s data collection practices create risks for consumers. Waxman was joined by Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., and Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C....
