EU Antitrust Watchdog Starts Up French Water Utility Probe

Law360, New York (January 18, 2012, 1:36 PM EST) -- The European Commission launched a formal investigation Wednesday into French water utilities Suez Environnement Co. SA, Veolia Environnement SA and Saur SA based on concerns that the trio may have hindered competition for water and waste water services.

The European Union antitrust watchdog plans to consider whether the companies have coordinated their activities, especially on "elements of the price invoiced to final customers," it said.

A Veolia spokeswoman said the company had "no doubt ... about the reality of the competition in France of [its] businesses"...
