Newmont Gets Go-Ahead For $193M Superfund Settlement

Law360, New York (January 18, 2012, 8:14 PM EST) -- A Washington federal judge on Tuesday signed off on the U.S. government's settlement with mining giant Newmont USA Ltd. over an estimated $193 million cleanup of a former uranium mine site found on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington state.

Under the consent decree, Newmont and subsidiary Dawn Mining Co. LLC will pay $18.7 million to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for past response costs and also cover some of the future cleanup costs at the Midnite Mine Superfund site. The deal further calls for the...
