Chevron Appeals 'Unconstitutional' $18B Ecuador Judgment

Law360, New York (January 20, 2012, 7:26 PM EST) -- Chevron Corp. on Friday appealed a judgment for $18 billion in damages in a high-profile lawsuit over pollution and contamination in the Amazon rain forest, arguing that the trial court had failed to respond to the Ecuadorean plaintiffs' extensive fraud and corruption.

The oil behemoth also claimed that the lower court's judgment was unlawfully premised on fraudulent and scientifically unproven evidence, as well as that it had illegally applied Ecuadorean law retroactively and had ignored the government's release of liability granted to Texaco Petroleum Co. —...
