WTO Rejects High Dominican Tariffs On Bags, Fabric

Law360, New York (January 31, 2012, 3:00 PM EST) -- The World Trade Organization found Tuesday that the Dominican Republic was not justified in placing high duties on plastic bags and tubular fabric imports, saying the country failed to show that the imports significantly injured the country’s domestic industry.

The WTO's Dispute Settlement Body said the Dominican Republic failed to provide “reasoned and adequate explanations” that the tariffs placed on imports of polypropylene bags and tubular fabric were warranted or that the threat to the country’s domestic industry was serious.
