EU Raids Electricity Cos. In Cartel Probe

Law360, New York (February 7, 2012, 3:11 PM EST) -- The European Commission on Tuesday raided companies that manage power exchanges in several member states on suspicion that they engaged in possible cartel practices, the antitrust watchdog said.

The commission confirmed that its officials, accompanied by their counterparts from national competition authorities, conducted unannounced inspections at the companies in question, but it did not identify them. Power exchanges provide services that facilitate electricity trading at the wholesale level.

Such inspections are considered are a preliminary step in investigations into suspected anti-competitive practices.
