US, EU Strike Deal Opening Trade In Organic Products

Law360, New York (February 15, 2012, 2:59 PM EST) -- Under an agreement announced Wednesday, agricultural products certified as organic in the U.S. or the European Union may be marketed as organic in both regions, opening up the estimated $50 billion transatlantic market for organic goods.

Previously, the U.S. and EU had separate certification standards for organic products, but officials said that eliminating those barriers will provide a strong foundation to support the growing organic industry. The agreement takes effect on June 1.
