China To Get Tough On Product Safety

Law360, New York (July 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Responding to the food and consumer product scares that have plagued the country in recent months, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday revealed plans to step up safety enforcements for all of China's imports and exports.

The new rules included higher requirements for market access and safety standards, better law enforcement and a move towards more transparent information disclosures.

For instance, manufacturers that fail quality standards will now be fined up to $26,460 and would possibly have their licenses revoked or company officials jailed, a statement...
