South Africa's Antitrust Cop Nixes Copper Cos.' Merger

Law360, New York (February 15, 2012, 5:21 PM EST) -- South Africa’s antitrust regulator on Wednesday said it blocked the proposed acquisition of Jobling Investments Pty Ltd. by Sunset Bay Trading 368 Pty Ltd., saying the combination of the two copper product makers would lead to a significant increase in concentration in the market.

Specifically, the Competition Commission found that the proposed transaction would lead to an increase in concentration in the distribution of solid copper extrusions and extruded copper bus bar, with the merged entity being the largest company in the business.
