OK For 1,700-Acre Arch Coal Mine Expansion Overturned

Law360, New York (February 15, 2012, 5:30 PM EST) -- The U.S. Forest Service has reversed course and revoked its approval of the expansion of two coal leases owned by an Arch Coal Inc. subsidiary into nearly 2,000 acres of roadless wilderness, environmental groups said Tuesday.

The 1,700-acre mine expansion would have enabled Arch Coal's Mountain Coal Co. to build up to 48 well pads and 6.5 miles of road, and continued methane emissions from Arch's West Elk coal mine, according to the group Earthjustice.
