Waxman Vows To Fight Bill That Would Extend Drug Patents, Data Exclusivity

Law360, New York (March 6, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- One of the authors of the Hatch-Waxman Act has vowed to oppose a bill that would extend data exclusivity and patents for “a very large number of medicines” if drug companies develop biodefense countermeasures.

In a speech to the annual conference for the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, Representative Henry Waxman said the bill, co-sponsored by Senators Joseph Lieberman and Orrin Hatch, was a “misguided giveaway to the brand drug industry.”
