Dispute Over Drugs Hinders WTO Protocol

Law360, New York (July 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An internal dispute over the availability of affordable medicines may prevent the European Parliament from ratifying the World Trade Organization protocol on intellectual property rights.

Earlier this month, the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament pushed back a vote on the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights protocol as part of an effort to force the European Commission and Council to commit to providing developing countries with essential medicines at lower costs.
