E.U. Commission Gives Parliament Ultimatum On Patent Overhaul

Law360, New York (March 8, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- In what amounts to an ultimatum to European Union legislators, the European Commission has warned it won’t redraft a proposed reform of the E.U. patent system if the European Parliament refuses to pass the current proposal.

“If the parliament decides to reject it, then the Commission will respect your wishes. I will not propose a new directive,” E.U. Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy told lawmakers.

“You can of course reject or substantially amend the proposal,” he said.
