EU Panel Deadlocks Over Tar Sands' Emission Value

Law360, New York (February 23, 2012, 4:16 PM EST) -- A European Union climate change panel failed to vote Thursday on whether to designate tar sands oil as more polluting than conventional crude, following intense pressure from the Canadian government and the oil industry to block the proposal.

The EU’s Fuel Quality Committee fell short of the votes needed to approve implementation of the EU Fuel Quality Directive, which would assign tar sands oil a higher greenhouse gas emission value than crude oil.
