Enviros Ask EPA To Revoke Va.'s Mining Permit Authority

Law360, New York (March 7, 2012, 4:28 PM EST) -- Environmental activists on Wednesday asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to strip the Virginia mining regulator's ability to move forward with mountaintop removal mining, saying it has repeatedly failed to notify the public when it grants pollutant discharge permits.

The Sierra Club, Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards and Appalachian Mountain Advocates claim the Virginia Division of Mined Land Reclamation is violating the Clean Water Act by issuing the permits without a public participation process.
