GOP Launches Push To Defang Lacey Act

Law360, New York (March 12, 2012, 6:36 PM EDT) -- Republican lawmakers on Thursday introduced legislation in both houses of Congress to amend an act barring the sale or import of fish, plants or wildlife deemed illegal by other nations by reducing its penalties and nixing provisions citing foreign laws.

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., both introduced legislation that would amend the Lacey Act by striking any reference to foreign laws and kill the provision allowing a federal prison sentence of up to 5 years, and reduces the maximum fine from $500,000...
