Calif. Chief Justice Warns Of Looming Case Delays

Law360, San Diego (March 19, 2012, 10:59 PM EDT) -- California’s chief justice on Monday warned state lawmakers that because of steep budget cuts and a rise in lawsuits, the courts are seeing potentially dangerous delays in the resolution of cases.

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who delivered her first speech to a joint session of the state Legislature after taking office 14 months ago, called for adequate and consistent funding for the judicial branch, saying $653 million in budget cuts have brought about the closure of courtrooms and clerk’s offices in 24 counties across the state,...
