Ukraine Contests Australia's Cigarette Logo Ban At WTO

Law360, New York (March 14, 2012, 2:03 PM EDT) -- Ukraine asked for consultations with Australia at the World Trade Organization on Tuesday over Australia’s laws and regulations that impose trademark restrictions and other plain packaging requirements on tobacco products.

The challenge targets the Tobacco Plain Packaging Act, a law passed by the Australian Senate in November. The legislation mandates that cigarettes be sold in brown, logo-free packages labeled in a small, uniform font. The graphic images representing smoking-related illnesses that currently cover part of Australian cigarette packs also will be retained under the law....
