USPTO Tosses Disputed Westinghouse Solar Panel Patent

Law360, New York (March 14, 2012, 1:35 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has thrown out a Westinghouse Solar Inc. patent for solar panel mounting systems, after rival Zep Solar Inc. asked the government to review Westinghouse's claims that the technology was protected, Zep said Wednesday.

The Westinghouse patent — U.S. Patent Number 7,987,641 — covered technology for a mounting system for solar panels, and the company has accused Zep of relying on the technology to develop its own mounting systems.
