La. High Court Returns 60-Year Hitch In Katrina Scam

Law360, New York (March 14, 2012, 6:10 PM EDT) -- The Louisiana Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated former Alabama state legislator John Colvin’s 60-year prison sentence for scheming six Hurricane Katrina victims out of $250,000, saying an appeals court erred when it found a trial court had abused its sentencing discretion.

In reinstating the sentence, the state’s high court said the appeals court lost sight of a fundamental principle of sentence review and shot down its ruling that the lengthy prison term was excessive.
