HHS Calls Out Two Insurers For 'Unreasonable' Rate Hikes

Law360, New York (March 22, 2012, 6:19 PM EDT) -- Two insurance companies have raised their premiums an “unreasonable” amount on individual and small group policyholders in nine states, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday, and called on the companies to rescind their rate hikes.

The insurers, John Alden Life Insurance Co. and Time Insurance Co., proposed rate increases of between 12 and 24 percent, on average, for certain health plans. The increases, which would go into effect in April and May, would affect more than 42,000 people, according to HHS....
