Thousands Of Nigerians Sue Shell Over 2008 Oil Spills

Law360, New York (March 23, 2012, 3:36 PM EDT) -- A coalition of 11,000 Nigerians on Friday hit a Royal Dutch Shell PLC unit with a multimillion-dollar lawsuit in London's High Court over two oil spills they claim have devastated the environment and their fishing industry.

Leigh Day & Co., the firm representing members of Nigeria's Bodo community, said the lawsuit against Shell Petroleum Development Co. (Nigeria) Ltd. marks the first time an oil company has faced claims in the U.K. from a community in the developing world for environmental damage caused by oil extraction operations....
