Scruggs Can't Delay Skilling Hearing For Surgery

Law360, New York (March 23, 2012, 4:23 PM EDT) -- A Mississippi federal judge said Thursday that imprisoned former attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs can't have elective hand surgery on the eve of a hearing to overturn his conviction for trying to influence a Mississippi judge with promises of a federal bench appointment.

Scruggs pled guilty in 2009 for telling Mississippi Judge Bobby DeLaughter that he could help him secure a federal bench judgeship with the help of Scruggs' brother-in-law, former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss. A hearing is schedule for March 26 on Scruggs' motion to...
