Shipping Co. Must Unload $2M For Oil Pollution Cover-Up

Law360, New York (March 27, 2012, 6:50 PM EDT) -- A Louisiana federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a Greek shipping company to pay a $2 million criminal penalty to the U.S. for covering up that it had dumped oil waste into the sea without using required pollution prevention equipment.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the crew on a cargo ship operated by Ilios Shipping Co. SA regularly dumped oily bilge waste and sludge into the sea from April 2009 until April 2011.
