New Venture To Hold Broad Patent Rights To Cloning Technologies

Law360, New York (April 6, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Geron Corp. and Exeter Life Sciences Inc. have created a joint venture that will hold broad patent rights to cloning technology, the two companies said.

The joint venture, named Start Licensing Inc., will control key intellectual property on cloning, the technique used to make genetic copies of animals, including pigs and cattle. The new company plans to sell licenses to biotechnology companies and universities that clone animals.

The first adult mammal to be cloned was Dolly the sheep, in 1997, by researchers at Scotland's Roslin Institute....
