DOI Unveils Plans For Faster Oil, Gas Permitting

Law360, New York (April 3, 2012, 3:41 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of the Interior unveiled plans Tuesday to speed up permitting of onshore oil and gas drilling on federal lands, nodding to industry criticisms that the process can be slow and cumbersome.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey said that in the next year, the agency will roll out an automated system for handling drilling permits that could reduce review time by two-thirds or more.
