The UK Can Learn From US Treatment Of Whistleblowers

Law360, New York (April 10, 2012, 1:42 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1986 amendment to the False Claims Act. According to Attorney General Eric Holder, whistleblowers have filed 8,000 False Claims Act actions (also known as “qui tam actions”) since the amendment, including a record 638 in the past year. And in 2011, courts awarded whistleblowers (often referred to as “relators” or “qui tam plaintiffs”) a percentage of the government’s recovery to the tune of $532 million.
