Edwards Trial Will Test DOJ's Theory Of Campaign Law

Law360, New York (April 13, 2012, 8:16 PM EDT) -- With trial looming, federal prosecutors will soon bet their high-profile case against former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, himself a former trial attorney, on his ruined reputation and an untested interpretation of campaign finance law, experts say.

Attorneys from the U.S. Department of Justice's public integrity team have accused Edwards of using nearly $1 million in illegal campaign donations to cover up an extramarital affair and the child he fathered, fearing they would have sunk his 2008 presidential bid.
