NY Bar Tells Firms To Stop Mandatory Retirement

Law360, New York (April 17, 2012, 10:03 PM EDT) -- The New York State Bar Association on Tuesday reiterated its position that law firms should end age-related mandatory retirement policies following last week’s $500,000 settlement of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s age discrimination suit against Kelley Drye & Warren LLP.

“Arbitrarily requiring a senior attorney to retire or assume a lesser status in a law firm solely because of age is not an acceptable policy,” NYSBA President Vincent E. Doyle III, a partner at Connors & Vilardo LLP, said in a statement.
