Actos May Increase Bladder Cancer Risk, Health Canada Warns

Law360, New York (April 24, 2012, 2:25 PM EDT) -- Health Canada and Takeda Canada Inc. said Thursday that patients who take Actos, a diabetes drug that has been the target of lawsuits in the U.S., could be at increased risk of bladder cancer and added warnings to the drug's description.

The joint warning was issued after a five-year report of an ongoing 10-year study in patients with diabetes suggested that taking Actos, pioglitazone hydrochloride, longer than 12 months increased the risk of developing bladder cancer.
