EU Sends Hungary To Court Over Data Agency Independence

Law360, Chicago (April 25, 2012, 8:05 PM EDT) -- The European Commission referred Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union on Wednesday over concerns about its new judiciary rules and its data protection agency's independence, specifically citing Hungary's recent, premature termination of its data protection commissioner.

The commission also said, however, that Hungary had made progress toward remedying concerns about the independence of its national central bank, and said it was ready to close the case on that issue as long as Hungary implements promised changes to its legislation.
