NY Senate Approves Bill Letting Attys Attach Arbitration Liens

Law360, New York (April 30, 2012, 5:48 PM EDT) -- The New York State Senate passed legislation Monday that would allow lawyers to attach a lien to awards and settlement proceeds their clients receive in arbitration or other alternative dispute resolutions, leaving the measure in the hands of the Assembly.

The bill, sponsored by John L. Sampson, D-Brooklyn — a party leader — breezed through the Senate with 51 yes votes after passing through the Judiciary Committee on March 20. The law would amend Section 475 of New York's judiciary law to allow for such liens....
