DOE Pulls Methane From Ice In Breakthrough Test

Law360, New York (May 3, 2012, 6:20 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Energy said Wednesday that it had successfully tested a new technology to extract natural gas from ice crystals in Alaska's North Slope, marking an unprecedented step toward tapping potentially vast new fuel reserves.

The agency said for the first time ever it produced a safe, steady flow of natural gas from methane hydrates — an ice-lattice structure with loaded with trapped methane — using a method developed in partnership with ConocoPhillips, the University of Bergen in Norway and the Japanese government....
