EU May Restrict Foreign Energy Cos.: Report

Law360, New York (August 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Though the European Commission has touted its plans to deregulate energy markets across member states, breaking into the industry may not be easy for non-European firms.

According to an internal European Commission document obtained by the Financial Times and published on Thursday, regulators are planning to restrict participation in the energy industry by outside companies, forbidding non-EU energy providers from obtaining “unrestricted access” to European markets.
