Consumer Group Urges FDA To Dump NuVal Nutrition Ratings

Law360, New York (May 15, 2012, 8:09 PM EDT) -- The advocacy group National Consumers League asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Thursday to stop using a nutritional ratings system developed by NuVal LLC, claiming the secret algorithm the system is based on leads to inconsistent scores that could mislead consumers.

The NCL called the NuVal system a “travesty,” arguing that its scores encourage consumers to choose highly processed foods over fruits, vegetables and whole grains, according to the a formal complaint the group filed with the FDA.
