GAO Urges CPSC To Expand Role In Setting Industry Standards

Law360, New York (May 22, 2012, 3:27 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Government Accountability Office on Monday urged the Consumer Product Safety Commission to take a more active role in the industry's development of voluntary standards for product hazards to help ensure compliance.

In a report to the U.S. House of Representatives appropriations committee’s subcommittee on financial services and general government, the GAO said voluntary standards are generally determined by private standard-setting organizations, with input from government representatives and industry groups, and do not have the force of law.
