Okla. County Sues McMoRan Over Zinc Smelter Residues

Law360, Chicago (May 24, 2012, 7:57 PM EDT) -- Northern Oklahoma's Kay County sued Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. and several affiliates in state court Wednesday seeking damages and cleanup costs for alleged soil and groundwater contamination from a zinc smelter that a Freeport predecessor closed nearly 40 years ago.

According to Ryan Whaley Coldiron Shandy PLLC, a law firm representing the county's board of commissioners, Freeport has already partially settled claims over the contamination with the Kay County city of Blackwell, Okla., where the smelter was located, for $54 million, and has proposed a...
