U.S. Officials Call For Shift In Import Safety Controls

Law360, New York (September 11, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. government must be “smarter” if it wants to improve the safety of imported goods, according to a report by a panel of senior administration officials released Monday in response to a recent spike in product recalls.

The report by the Interagency Working Group on Import Safety, chaired by U.S. Health and Human Services secretary Mike Leavitt, recommends a wholesale shift in strategy to protect American consumers from potentially dangerous imports.
