SeaWorld's Unsafe Conditions Led To Trainer's Death: Judge

Law360, New York (May 31, 2012, 8:19 PM EDT) -- SeaWorld of Florida LLC exposed employees to unsafe conditions that led to a trainer being drowned by a killer whale, an administrative judge said Wednesday, but he reduced a $75,000 penalty to $12,000, saying the company's violation was “serious” rather than “willful.”

Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission Judge Ken Welsch also said that SeaWorld's animal training methods are not sufficient to protect trainers, and the company should use barriers to prevent another tragedy.
