Smith & Nephew Hip Problems May Persist Beyond Recall

Law360, New York (June 4, 2012, 7:34 PM EDT) -- Smith & Nephew PLC on Friday recalled a metal liner used in hip implants after patients reported infections and other problems, an event likely to draw the orthopedic giant into the massive litigation over the devices despite its claims that the injuries at issue are different in nature.

The U.K.-based company is voluntarily pulling the metal liner component of its R3 Acetabular System from the market. A spokeswoman for Smith & Nephew told Law360 the recall was prompted by an uptick in revisionary surgeries for patients...
