Calif. Panel OKs Civil Fee Hike To Keep Courts Afloat

Law360, San Diego (June 7, 2012, 7:27 PM EDT) -- A California Senate panel on Thursday approved a measure to generate $50 million for the state’s cash-strapped trial courts by hiking up civil fees as proposed in Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget.

The Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee voted 9-3 in favor of proposed trailer bill language for the state budget legislation to increase civil court fees to provide $50 million for the trial court trust fund in order to offset $350 million in ongoing reductions in funding for court operations contained in previous budget acts....
