EU Lawmakers Push For Tougher Breast Implant Standards

Law360, New York (June 14, 2012, 8:17 PM EDT) -- European lawmakers on Thursday proposed a host of measures to strengthen breast implant safety standards, including a premarket authorization system, in order to avoid a repeat of a now-defunct French company's use of industrial silicone in the product.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution that called for regulators to approve breast implants and other high-risk medical devices before they hit the market and to establish a unique device identification system or similar tool to better trace the devices once they are on the market.
