EPA Air Chief Defends Agency Gaffes On Emissions Rules

Law360, New York (June 19, 2012, 8:42 PM EDT) -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency air quality chief Gina McCarthy on Tuesday defended the EPA against Republican claims that agency officials have privately acknowledged air emissions regulations will destroy coal power, stressing that the coal industry’s problems were economic.

In a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing, Republican lawmakers grilled McCarthy about remarks EPA Region 1 Administrator Curt Spalding made at a private event last month, in which he said implementing the regulations would be “painful every step of the way.”
