High Court Wants SG's Take On Death Benefit Law Preemption

Law360, New York (June 18, 2012, 4:47 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday asked Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. to weigh in on a lawsuit that could clarify whether federal law preempts state laws governing who should receive death benefits under Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance policies.

“The solicitor general is invited to file briefs in these cases expressing the views of the United States,” the court said in a brief order in the case of Hillman v. Maretta.
