Samsonite Yanks Chinese Suitcases Due To Chemical Worries

Law360, New York (June 18, 2012, 2:44 PM EDT) -- Samsonite International SA has recalled its Tokyo Chic suitcases from stores in Hong Kong, the company said Monday, amid reports by a Chinese consumer group that the suitcase handles contained dangerously high levels of carcinogenic chemicals.

The Hong Kong Consumer Council reported Friday that tests of one sample of the rolling suitcases revealed nearly 1,800 times the safe amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. News of the report sent Samsonite’s stock tumbling more than 16 percent in Hong Kong trading Friday.
