Sinosteel Gets Go-Ahead For Western Australia Ore Mine

Law360, New York (June 19, 2012, 8:03 PM EDT) -- The environmental authority of the state of Western Australia gave a green light Monday to a two-pit iron ore mine project that owner Sinosteel Midwest Corp. Ltd. expects will yield 15 million metric tons (16.5 million tons) of ore annually.

A recommendation for conditional approval from the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority stipulates that Sinosteel, a unit of the eponymous state-owned Chinese steel giant, conduct regular surveys to monitor the impact the mining operation has on local plant and animal species, as well as Aboriginal land...
