Italian Court OKs Enel's €2B Oil-To-Coal Plant Conversion

Law360, New York (June 20, 2012, 6:14 PM EDT) -- Italy's top administrative court on Wednesday said Enel SpA, the country's biggest electric utility, could resume plans to convert a oil-burning plant to coal, a €2 billion ($2.6 billion) project that has drawn fire from locals and environmental groups.

The Council of State reversed its own ruling from May 2011, which revoked clearance for the 1,980-megawatt Porto Tolle project after environmental groups lined up against it. Enel has been working on the conversion since 2005, but has seen public support sour as the recession dragged down...
